“Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.” Harry Truman
As a leader, I have learned the importance of reading. I have used this quote as a catchphrase, simply as, leaders are readers. I have used the catchphrase while speaking to various groups to emphasize the importance of reading and leading. I believe it’s true if you want to grow in your leadership capacity you need to read books to help you grow in your character, knowledge, and skill development.
It’s a New Year! Make a goal of reading 12 books this year. That is only one book per month. Start a list of books categorized by the areas you wish to develop. For example, if you wanted to grow in a leadership skill, then try searching your favorite book site, maybe Amazon, or ask for a recommendation. If there is someone whose leadership skills you admire, then ask them for a book that helped them grow as a leader. Start your search, make a list, and purchase the books. Try buying a new book only after you finish the previous one. That may help you feel less overwhelmed. Make your goal, then make a plan to accomplish your goal. Easier said, then done! Share your goal on social media and ask others to join you. That may help the motivation factor.
